Abstract

Twelve accessions of local bitter gourds were tested in comparison with a cultivated bitter gourd at Phichit Horticultural Research Center in summer 2000. Botanical and horticultural characteristics of leaf, pistillate flower, staminate flower, fruit and seeds were recorded. Ripe fruit yield of the accessions ranged from 3,227 to 6,912 kg/ha. Yield was not significantly different among the accessions but showed high variation in protein levels in extraction from endosperm. The partial protein powder ranged from 104.33 to 208.67 mg/5 g of endopsperm while the specific activity protein at 30 kDa evaluated by the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) method ranged from 104.86 to 265.42 ?g/5g of endosperm. One specific accession (No.16) gave the highest level of the specific activity protein at 30 kDa, however, it gave high level of the partial protein powder, 168.33 ?g/5g. Contradictory, the other accession (No.11) which had more or less the same level of total protein as the mentioned accession, had rather low level of the specific activity protein at 30 kDa, 149.96 ?g/5g of endosperm.

Abstract

Ten varieties of local chili were collected from different locations in Thailand. Observation and evaluation of those varieties were made in comparison with five male sterile varieties introduced from abroad. Five varieties were selected among these ten varieties as male parents. They were self-pollinated for two generations before crossing with two male sterile lines. Ten F1 hybrid lines were obtained and compared with the male parents at a private company in Chiang Rai and at the Department of Horticulture, Chiang Mai University. The results showed that the three F1 hybrid lines, K Y1-1 x Bang-Chang, KY 1- 1 x Nhum Khiew and KY 1-1 x Nhum Khiew Maejo yielded 76.96%, 39.13% and 8.09% higher than the male parents which are landrace varieties. Moreover, the fruit quality was also higher than those of the male parents. They also have a rather good shape, smooth skin and big fruits. The degree of pungency as measured by spectrophotometer was different from that measured by human bite test. The highest pungency of bite test was found in Fang chili whereas the spectrophotometer methods indicated that Bang- Chang chili had the highest pungency. KY 1-1 x Nhum Khiew Maejo, CF21789 x Nhum Khiew and KY 1-1 x Nhum Khiew showed high percentage of heterosis. Pungency of F1 hybrid tested by spectrophotometer methods indicated that different male parents produce different degree of pungency. Pungency was segregated between their male and female parents, revealing that the trait was polygenically controlled with mainly dominant gene action. Variation in degree of pungency was also controlled by environment.

Abstract

Nine inbred lines of Chinese radish were investigated for their self-incompatibility levels using fluorescent microscope technique and seed set analysis. The results showed that most of the inbred lines were self-incompatible. They were crossed in all combinations to be selected for the best hybrid variety. From varietal trial and ability to set seeds, it was found that hybrid 27 x 18 and some of hybrid 77 x 18 had good horticultural characteristics such as uniformity, dark green leaf without hair, cylindrical shape, smooth skin, firm texture of root and root weight of about 360-400 g. These characteristics are market acceptable. Root yield of these hybrids in the previous experiments was a lot higher than marketed varieties. The hybrid varieties should be further tested in farmer’s field.
